Semi-permanent tattoos Vs Traditional Tattoos.

Many people understand that a tattoo needs to be in the skin. But how deep is the tattoo or semi-permanent tattoo go??

Both Microblading and Scalp Micropigmentation do not go as far a regular tattoo. Regular tattoos are inserted into the Dermis, where the fatty and muscle tissue can be located. Where as the Microblading and SMP stay superficial in the Epidermis.

**Its Important to note that both Microblading and SMP will need following up appointments for touch-ups. This is because the skin is constantly remaking itself.

Types of Tattoo inks

Cosmetic tattoo pigments are made up of smaller pigment particles that are suspended in a diluter – this allows for a more natural, softer colour in the skin that can be layered to create a much more realistic finish.

Traditional tattoo inks are much more concentrated which means that they are much stronger in colour.

Here is the break down to the layers of the skin:

LAYERS OF THE SKIN

The skin is comprised of three main layers the Epidermis, Dermis and the Subcutaneous Tissue.

Epidermis

The Epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin.  Its main purpose is protection.

The top layer is the epidermis, which is tough, but because of its exposure it is constantly being worn down and replaced. The outer most layers contain no blood vessels or nerves and it prevents loss of moisture from the body. Epidermis is made up of Keratinocytes but also contains Melanocytes, Langerhans cells, Merkel cells, and inflammatory cells.

Dermis

The main purpose of the Dermis is to protect the body from outside pathogens and as well help contain organs together.

The dermis is a fibrous structure composed of collagen, elastic tissue, and other extracellular components that includes vasculature, nerve endings, hair follicles, and glands. The dermis contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, hair follicles, and glands that produce sweat, which helps regulate body temperature, and sebum, an oily substance that helps keep the skin from drying out.

Differences between Semi-permanent and Traditional Tattoos:

The main differenc between both is the location on where the ink is inserted.

Microblading

Ink is implanted in the Basal Cell Layer, just below the Stratum Spinosum. The Stratum Basale divides the epidermis from the dermis layer of the skin. By doing this the results are crisp, fine lines and minimal bleeding.

The pigment needs to be inserted towards the bottom of the epidermis. This will allow for the skin to retain the ink longer and allow for more a crisp look. If you don’t go deep enough, then the skin will rejuvenate too fast causing fading of the pigment.

Traditional Tattoo

For traditional tattoos the ink is inserted in the dermis for long lasting results. Regular tattoo machines have needles that pierce the skin whilst creating a vacuum that pulls the pigment into it.

On the other hand, if you go too deep and past the dermis, you can cause damage, potentially permanent Scarring as well.
